9:30 AM Being LGBTQ in College (2 hours)

This program will focus on better understanding who LGBTQ students are and what they experience in the college setting. It is designed to help participants understand what it means to be a sexual or gender minority on campus and how to respond to them in ways that are affirmative and helpful.

Learning Objectives:

*   Participants will be able to define different sexual and gender minority groups they might encounter on campus.
*   Participants will be able to describe the campus climate for many LGBTQ students and how to improve it

12:00 PM Understanding the Intersection of Student Development and LGBTQ Identity Development (2 hours)

In this program we will review student development theory and identity development theory related to being lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender and how they interact during the college experience. We will also briefly address intersections with other aspects of identity. In addition, we will examine the way in which relationships with family and peers might influence the process of identity development on different levels.

Learning Objectives:

*   Participants will be able to describe ways in which identity development as a sexual or gender minority intersects with individuals’ development as students over their college career
*   Participants will be able to identify ways in which they might facilitate or thwart students’ development on multiple levels

2:30 PM Improving the Climate for LGBTQ Students (2 hours)

The focus of this program will be on pragmatic steps colleges and universities can take in and out of the classroom to create a more affirmative climate for LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff. We will provide recommendations for individual level and environmental level action.

Learning Objectives:

*   Participants will be able to identify action they can take in their individual interactions with students to create a more affirmative climate for LGBTQ students
*   Participants will be able to identify action their college or university can take at the environmental level to create a more affirmative climate for LGBTQ students

I hope to see many of you here!
