The purpose of professional development is to serve PCA members and all professional counselors and marriage and family therapists by offering continuing education and the opportunity to earn contact hours towards recertification and license renewal through the PCA state conference and its divisions and chapters. Upcoming Continuing Education Workshops and Trainings May 9, 10 and May 16 , 17 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Couples and Family Counseling The participants study the theory and practice of couple and family counseling, with an emphasis on models of family development and major approaches to intervention with couples and families. Systemic models of family intervention are emphasized, as well as other historically important and contemporary approaches to couple and family therapy. The ability to assess family dynamics—including rules, interactional styles, and coalitions—is stressed to help the participants develop effective counseling or treatment plans. The course blends didactic and experiential learning for the purpose of providing the participants with the opportunity to develop skills and connect them to the appropriate knowledge base. Professional development (PD) is most active from September through May. The chair of professional development is responsible for gathering requests for approval of each workshop and the state conference for continuing education, issuing approval for each workshop/state conference, processing contact hours in person at the state conference or by mail for division/chapter workshops, and maintaining the records for current and prior years of PCA professional development. ResourcesPCA parent association American Counseling Association (ACA) makes available to professional counselors and practitioners of other mental health professions a wide variety of professional development resources, resources such as books, videos, and home-studies. One resource, in particular, is professional counseling's flagship journal, the Journal of Counseling & Development. Most of them meet continuing education unit (CEU) requirements for professional counseling state licensure and board certification, and in many cases, for the psychology and social work professions, as well.
