Samuel T. Gladding
Samuel T. Gladding is a
professor and chair of the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest
University in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina. His academic degrees are from Wake Forest University (B.A.,
M.A.Ed.), Yale University (M.A.), and the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro (Ph.D.). At Wake Forest outside of his current
position, he has served as Assistant to the President
and Associate Provost.
Prior to his arrival at Wake Forest, Gladding held academic appointments at
the University of Alabama at Birmingham and
Fairfield University in Connecticut. He has also been a clinician at a
mental health center, a captain in the U.S. Army, and an
instructor of psychology at a community college. Gladding’s leadership in
the field of counseling includes service as president of the
American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor
Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for
Specialists in Group Work (ASGW), and Chi Sigma Iota (international
counseling academic and honor society). He is the former editor
of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work and a Fellow in both ACA
and ASGW. He has taken students abroad to study in Vienna,
Austria, and to work with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India. Gladding has
also done international work with universities, associations,
and agencies in Malaysia, Australia, Canada, and South Africa.
In 1999, Gladding was cited as being in the top 1% of
contributors to the Journal of Counseling and Development for the
15-year period, 1978-1993. In addition to writing for academic journals, Dr.
Gladding has authored over 30 books on counseling
including works on family counseling, group counseling, clinical mental
health counseling, professional identity, use of the creative arts in counseling, counseling theories, and a counseling dictionary.
Gladding is a
National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Mental Health
Counselor (CCMHC), and a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina.
He is a trustee of the American Counseling Association Foundation and a
member of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. Dr.
Gladding has been active in community affairs, too. He has served as
president of Leadership Winston-Salem and continues to practice as a
counselor with CareNet of the Triad, an affiliate of the Wake Forest
University Baptist Medical Center.He is married to the former Claire Tillson
and the father of three children – Ben, Nate, and Tim. In his spare time, he
enjoys swimming, writing poetry, listening to music, and reading humor.

Today’s
practicing professional counselor daily faces a multitude of stresses and
pressures that take a toll on the psychological and physical health of the
counselor. This program will present counselors with a
model for understanding their well-being and techniques to enhance their
ability to manage stress and optimize their functioning.
Relationships
with Fathers

In this
experiential workshop, participants will focus on the relationship with the
father who is missing, both physically and emotionally. Skills and
techniques will be presented which participants can use to help themselves
and their clients to discover and process feelings evoked regarding missing
fathers. The outcome of this father relationship is both personal and
professional growth.

CONFERENCE CANCELLATION/REFUND
POLICY: PCA has a policy regarding Conference Cancellation
and refunds. Refunds requested in writing and received by a
particular date will be issued minus a $50 processing fee. No
refunds will be issued after the published date. Refund requests should
be sent to the PCA Conference Chair.
Room Reservations
The PCA has secured a block of rooms at Pennsylvania State University's
Penn Stater Conference Center for the 2009 PCA Annual Conference.
The special rate is $103 for singles and $113 for doubles. When making
reservations be sure to reference the conference code - PCA1029. These room
rates will be in effect until September 30, 2009. To make your reservations
at the Penn Stater Conference Center, call 1-800-233-7505.
Last year (2008) the reserved block of room were sold out early. If you
know you are going to be attending the conference and want to take advantage
of the special room rate, make your reservations early. Once the block of
rooms has been booked, the special rate will not apply regardless of the
cutoff date.
Exhibitor Information
The PCA Annual Conference provides your organization with an excellent
opportunity to communicate your message to an ever-increasing number of
professional counselors at a very minimal cost. Exhibit opportunities
include table displays or "Take-One" areas (spaces where materials and
information can be displayed without a representative being present). Other
opportunities for increasing your organization's visibility include
advertising in the conference program, sponsoring conference breaks or the
graduate student reception, and/or providing give-away items such as key
chains, pens, notebooks, etc. (No advertising flyers will be accepted as
give-away items.)
