What is the DCA?

New Castle Co., DE's Lums Pond State ParkThe Delaware Counseling Association (DCA) is a state branch of the American Counseling Association (ACA), but currently in inactive status.  It represents the 1,400-plus professional counselors who live and practice in Pennsylvania's neighbor, the First State.

Delaware lacks an ACA state branch due to the DCA's inactive status.  Because of this, in 2001-02, the PCA Executive Council voted to open the Pennsylvania Counseling Association's (PCA) door to former DCA members and all Delaware-based professional counselors.  The PCA wants to provide Delaware professional counselors of all specialties opportunities to network, to participate in professional development activities, and to socialize!  And ultimately, the PCA would like to see a reactivated DCA and will assist in that process any way that it can.

To my fellow professional counselors in Delaware:

Now more than ever, the professional counselors of Delaware need a united voice.  Managed care, funding, insurance, licensure, and professional development are just some of the areas that need to be addressed.  I am urging you to join me in my efforts to bring the Delaware Counseling Association (DCA) charter back to an active status with the American Counseling Association (ACA).

The Pennsylvania Counseling Association has graciously donated this space as a way to communicate to potential leaders in our profession in the State of Delaware.  We are fortunate that the Delaware School Counseling Association, a former DCA division, is also supporting these efforts and have continued to include the DCA on its unified dues statement for the past few years, and that Maggie Thomas, M.Ed., has continued to maintain the treasury even in the absence of an active organization.  What this allows is for the DCA to have the funding to begin its restructuring efforts.

By returning to active status with the ACA, Delaware will once again have representation at the national level of the profession.  Our voice is of equal importance, but it will remain silent without an active association.  The leadership of the ACA and its regional leadership are also willing to help in our efforts.

If you are a member of the ACA in Delaware or would like to become an ACA member and join me in my efforts to regain our charter, I urge you to contact me at cbrown@mail.milford.k12.de.us .

How Do I Join the DCA?

Given the fact that the DCA is in inactive status, it's technically not possible to "join" the DCA at this time.  That said, the PCA is taking names for a list of prospective members.  ACA by-laws require that at least 50 names be compiled in order to apply for a new charter.  (In order to view the ACA by-laws, you'll need to use the [free]  Adobe Acrobat Trademark  document reader.)

If you live and/or practice in Delaware and would like to add your name to that list--and we hope you do--click on the picture of Delaware's famous boardwalk fries below to send an e-mail message to us (be sure to include your name, phone number, and e-mail address):

Meanwhile, How Do I Join the PCA?

Professional counselors and professional counseling graduate students in Delaware are invited to join the PCA due to the DCA's current inactive status.  Please visit the PCA's Membership page where you'll see step-by-step instructions, or call (717) 571-6240 (outside the U.S.:  country code is "+1") to request a PCA Membership Application.  The PCA welcomes you in advance!
